The Hub Project has an immediate opening for a Managing Director of Policy and Research to lead and oversee the overall policy and research department responsible for grounding advocacy campaigns in sound policy and well-considered research. Campaigns include protecting access to affordable health care, educating the public on wealth inequality baked in to our tax code, and building a sustainable and inclusive democracy. This position is responsible for the development and growth of a six-person policy and research team. Additionally, the Managing Director of Policy and Research will play a key role in the overall direction of the organization and our efforts to partner with allies to develop innovative strategies to promote an economy that works for all Americans and a democracy with full participation.

This is an executive level position within the organization and is a key senior leadership position at a growing, innovative, and fast-paced progressive organization that is committed to driving the work with a diversity, equity, and inclusion lens. As such, you will work closely with the Executive Director and other Managing Directors to guide organization-wide management, development, and growth. Additionally, you will represent The Hub at funder meetings and external events, allocate and prioritize budget priorities, oversee internal staff and vendors, and help educate the progressive movement on progressive policies.

The ideal candidate has experience with public policy research, especially in a political, legislative or campaign context, values management as a skill, enjoys advising organizational strategic direction, is comfortable with data analysis, and is an excellent writer. The ideal candidate has managed large teams, is passionate about progressive issues and translating academic research to a broader audience, and is excited to roll up their sleeves and help shape a growing and evolving organization.

As the Managing Director of Policy and Research, you’ll…

  • Build and develop a growing team of policy researchers to ground all of the work of The Hub Project in smart, progressive policy with incisive research that conveys the necessity for our advocacy campaigns including advising on projects, guiding professional development, and recruiting new talent.
  • Be a leader on a dynamic management team that fosters creative and innovative advocacy work and grows the skills and capabilities of the organization’s staff, creates internal processes and norms, and develops high-level political strategy for our programs.
  • Guide the strategic direction of various economic and democracy advocacy campaigns.
  • Work with the Hub team to generate ideas for persuasive research products and manages the team responsible for the execution of those products, working with associate directors to ensure quality and timeliness of products.
  • Build and grow research, policy, advocacy, and education partnerships with a variety of allied groups working toward aligned goals.
  • Be a principal driver of strategic planning within the organization – developing forward-looking plans that help guide our overall work and that of key partners.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on the campaign, digital, and communications teams to advance various campaigns.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director on other organizational priorities as assigned.

About you…

  • You have experience managing large teams and know how to motivate both your direct reports and peers, as well as work across departments to get things done.
  • You’re highly organized, detail-oriented, data-driven, and work well under pressure.
  • You have a sense of humor and are comfortable taking on evolving responsibilities in a fast-paced work environment.
  • You are comfortable managing those conducting data analysis and teams interpreting (and translating) academic research.
  • You are an outstanding writer and editor.

In addition, it would be a bonus if…

  • You have an advanced degree in a relevant field such as economics, public policy, or political science.
  • You have deeper experience working on economic policy – anything from wages, budget, taxes, labor markets, health care, anti-trust, family economic supports, and other such areas.
  • You have deep experience working on democracy policy – courts, voting rights, legislative structures and rules, and other aspects of the rules of our democracy.
  • You have experience working in nonprofit advocacy, government, or political campaigns.
  • You have experience working with grant-makers and public speaking.
